Father Paul Lennon | Doreen Cullen Social Work Scholarship
 
The Father Paul Lennon | Doreen Cullen Scholarship is awarded annually by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Toronto to persons wanting to pursue studies in social work in a degree-granting Social Work or diploma-granting Social Services program in an Ontario college or university accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, as defined by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
 
While scholarship preference will be toward graduates of the Catholic school system in the Archdiocese of Toronto, it is open to all applicants who are prepared to make a commitment to pursuing a career in social work/social services. It is also open to those persons already working with a member agency of Catholic Charities who wish to pursue further study.
 
Candidates Commitment
To be considered for an Lennon Cullen scholarship, all applicants must commit to working for a period of two years (or 24 consecutive months) with a Catholic social service agency. They must identify when possible, the agency within which they would be working. The scholarship is limited to Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents.
 
Submission Documentation
To be considered for as a candidate for the scholarship, all applicants must submit to the chair of the Catholic Charities Scholarship Committee a completed application through the online application portal, inclusive of the following documents:
  • Resume / CV
  • A short essay on working in a Catholic Social Service agency.
    {Essays must be at least 750 words or three typewritten pages of 250 words each.
  • At least two letters of endorsement from a teacher, parish priest, or agency supervisor.
Only complete applications with all required supporting materials that are received by the published deadline will be considered by the Scholarship Committee for evaluation.
 
Interviews of the shortlisted candidates will be conducted with the Scholarship Committee.
 
To be eligible for scholarship payment, all applicants for Lennon Cullen scholarships must provide written proof of enrollment in the program for which a scholarship is sought before the funds are released. Proof of enrollment is generally a letter from the registrar’s office.
 
Proof of enrollment, which should include a letter from the Registrar, must document the following
  • Student enrollment status (full-time/part-time)
  • Level of study (undergraduate/graduate)
  • Program of study
Submission Deadline
The DEADLINE for submission of essays for those applying for a scholarship is December 1st.
Applicants will be notified either by email or letter by January of the following year.

Committee Assessment
All completed applications accompanied by all required supporting materials will be reviewed by the Catholic Charities Scholarship Committee to ensure that every applicant receives full consideration.
 
The committee also will assess students based on the alignment of a candidate’s coursework with work being done by member agencies of Catholic Charities.

All decisions by the Scholarship Application Evaluation Committee are final and any attempts by applicants to lobby or persuade the committee during the process will result in immediate disqualification.

Unless otherwise specified, scholarships are given for only one (1) year. The year for which the scholarship is provided will be identified in the award.

Applicants who are awarded an Lennon Cullen scholarship will have three weeks from the date of notification to submit proof of enrollment. If documentation is not submitted before the deadline, the scholarship offer will be withdrawn. Exceptions to this policy will be considered on a case by case basis if extenuating circumstances are demonstrated.
 
Scholarship payment will be made by cheque and sent on behalf of applicant.
